Gillie and Jake's Luangwa Valley Retreat

We all know that the Luangwa Valley is one of Africa's top wildlife destinations and it's right on our doorstep. The lodges and camps provide excellent service to suit most people's budgets and needs. But sometimes if you're travelling as a larger group or have friends and family you want to take on holiday and show them something special the price of airfares and even the best value package becomes prohibitive. Or you'd love to take friends to the Valley more often but just can't afford to be out of touch with work. Perhaps it's mid season and you cant find a lodge that will take a local booking or a party with children. If you still want to visit the Luangwa then we have the answer.

Our house is five minutes from the entrance to South Luangwa National park in Mfuwe. It stands on 200 acres of private land with a breathtaking, widescreen 180 degree view over a winter thorn studded dambo, frequented by elephant, giraffe, buffalo, puku and other game. Raised up on a ridge with a lagoon at its foot the game never strays far from this permanent water source which attracts grazers and predators alike.

The house is a large open plan bungalow with a central living room, dining room and kitchen. There is a huge master suite with private bath, WC and shower, a veranda and a kid's bedroom attached. At the other end of the house are two further bedrooms one with a double and the other with a double and a three quarter bed. These rooms also have a private sitting area and share a bathroom with bath and shower. The main house has large mezzanine floors above half of its area which are suitable for additional sleeping space if there are extra kids in the group; spare mattresses, bedding and mosquito nets are available to accommodate these.

A stones throw away there is a self-contained cottage next to the private swimming pool which has a double bed, sitting area and small kitchen and is of course en suite. There is a loft space which can accommodate kids as well!

We are on mains electricity and the house has its own borehole. There is a landline available to receive incoming calls, Celtel coverage which if you're a real road warrior will allow you to connect on your laptop to the internet. Alternately Flatdogs has ain internet café where you can use your own laptop of their PC's….so while your friends are out enjoying themselves you can still submit that report you are supposed to be working on at home! The house is as child friendly as a home in the middle of a wildlife area can be with mosquito nets on all beds and bars and gauze on all windows making it relatively safe from mosquitoes and other larger things that bite. To keep the kids occupied when they are back at the house you'll have the pool (which has a paddling section) a tree house, toys and games. Babysitting can be organised locally but there we have staff accommodation with a hot shower if you want to travel with your own child carers.

Fully furnished with all bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery and kitchen appliances with gas for backup in case of a temporary Zesco outage, our staff is on hand to clean the house and assist you. But it is self-catering and we do not offer Bar & Restaurant or Safari Activities all of which can be booked at the splendid Flatdogs Camp a few minutes away. However the house is ideally suited to a self-drive group who would bring with them their own supplies. There are local shops selling basic goods (flour, salt, UHT Milk, some vegetables etc) and a Chipata farm has established an outlet at the BP station selling excellent meat and dairy products, fresh frozen milk and other goodies. There is also a liquor shop called Kazuma next to the Cobra rest house where you can buy a reasonable selection of South African wines by the case at good prices and tinned beer by the case. We keep a stock of Mosi and soft drink empties at the house which you are welcome to use during your stay to buy locally bottled drinks either at the Zambia Bottlers container near the airport or from the various “Tarvens” around the BP Station.

More and more it is possible to arrive in Mfuwe with no supplies at all and get pretty much everything you need there….IF YOU HAVE A CAR TO GO SHOPPING WITH!

So if some of the party want to fly then send Dad with the car and the grub!

We do not advise that you walk to the shops from the house as wildlife abounds in the area. You may of course contact Flatdogs and arrange for airport transfers, game drives and use of their restaurant during your stay but we would still recommend that you have your own wheels as this will allow you to self-drive in the Park for some of your trips which is most enjoyable and cheaper!

Please contact us for more information and we will advise you on the best way to enjoy a holiday in our home, which can comfortably sleep 8 adults and 4 children in four bedrooms plus the upper floor.
