Forodhani House

About Forodhani House

Forodhani means "watch-post" in Swahili, and takes its name from the site where it is built - right on the sea-front with a 270 degree view of the sea all around. At the site of the original watch-post was the look-out for boats coming and going to Lamu. Now you can still enjoy this unique spot, as you sit on the terrace and watch the dhows trailing by and the daily to and fro of the boats between Shela and Lamu Town. You also get a great view of the dhow races held regularly during the year - a big event on Lamu - as the starting and finishing point is on the beach just to the right of the house. Look down from the terrace with your drink in hand, and cheer on your favourite dhow.

Forodhani is a new house and so has all the advantages of modernity and solid building. There is a 10 metre swimming pool, the kitchen is well-equipped and around the house are various iPOD docks as well as a DVD machine. The house is also a tribute to local craftsmen and the traditional Swahili style - old-style vidakas adorn the walls, and the furnishings include hand-woven rugs, light curtains, antique coffee-tables and intriguing-looking old wooden chests.

The house comes with 4 staff - a chef, and 3 room stewards, who will look after all your needs. As with all our retreats, the chef will discuss with you on a daily basis what fresh seafood is available, and will make delicious meals for you with local fresh ingredients. He is also very used to preparing international cuisine, and so can cater to your needs, including for children.

As you enter the house you climb the short stairway to the main terrace and lounge, which overlooks the jetty, the beach and the sea. The gallery just off the lounge leads to the dining room which is sheltered but still open on one side so that you can enjoy the balmy night air. Alternative dining areas, if you would like a change, are the garden, with its scents of ylang-ylang and frangipani as well as the ubiquitious bougainvillae found everywhere on Lamu Island. Or, you could have a romantic dinner on the rooftop amongst the stars.

The 5 double bedrooms are situated as follows: the first one is on the ground floor facing the pool; on the first floor there are 3 double rooms, each with a terrace and a sea-view, and on the second floor is the master bedroom. All rooms are ensuite and spacious. There are shady terraces and relaxing barazas throughout the house, and so it is always possible to find a quiet corner to relax or read a book, or you can simply hang out on the main terrace, by the pool, and enjoy the house to its fullest.

"A wonderful week at Forodhani House in Lamu!"

I booked Forodhani House to finish up a safari in Kenya. We arrived tired hot and dusty from a quite long journey but after a warm welcome at Mokowe (where we left our car) by the charming guests relation manager, and with complimentary fresh fruit juices and an introduction to the island, we were shown the whole house. It sits just along the beach. It was perfect. The Villa is large, very well decorated, clean, with lots of little touches to make our stay comfortable. We could feel the aches and pains drift away already.

I chose Forodhani House for its stunning location beach and sea-views but here this does not mean going without luxury. All showers are spacious with copious warm water and the beds had fresh crisp linen. The food cooked by our Chef, Amos, was always delicious and well presented with ample choice. Best of all was the friendly staff from the house to the water sports staff around and to the sweet lady who gave me one of the best massage in Africa. While we were there sardins jumped out of the ocean in front of us to escape bigger fishes, quite often when we were having breakfast, we saw once a kingfish jumping in front of us too, we went to see turtles clutches on the island just in front too ! Wonderful wildlife also here, we didn't come for it, it was a great surprise !
